2nd training workshop on ECtHR litigation

On March 24-26, 2006, the Stitching Russian Justice Initiative hosted the 2nd Training Workshop on European Court of Human Rights Litigation. The workshop was attended by lawyer and human rights defenders from the Republics of the Northern Caucasus who are involved in criminal law practice and interested in bringing cases before the ECtHR.

The European Court of Human Rights had a hearing on merits of the first case regarding forced disappearances in Chechnya on December 8, 2005. The case will set important precedents for future cases regarding forced disappearances in Chechnya.

The Swedish organization Forum for Living History awarded Arsen Sakalov, coordinator for the Chechnya Justice Project, the 2005 Per Anger Prize for his efforts to bring justice to victims of human rights in Chechnya.
