On 29 September 2010 the Human Rights Commissioner of the Council of Europe released his report on the monitoring of investigations into enforced disappearances that occurred during the Georgia-South Ossetia conflict of 2008. Russian Justice Initiative participated in the preparation of the report as experts. Monitors interviewed the affected families as well as officials in various Government offices, and reviewed the documentation concerning the violations. On the basis of this information the monitors concluded official investigations were not effective, thorough or independent. No perpetrators of grave crimes committed during the Georgia-South Ossetia conflict have been tried, and the fate of missing persons still remains unknown.
