European Court of Human Rights condemns Russia on Chechen disappearance case

The European Court of Human Rights today condemned Russia for the disappearance and death of a 61-year old Chechen man. In a strongly worded judgment, the Court also condemned the practice of disappearances in Chechnya and lamented the acquiescence in the situation on the part of the authorities.

European Court to rule on Chechen disappearance filmed by Russian soldiers

The European Court of Human Rights will on 5 April 2007 rule on a disappearance case from Chechnya. The main evidence in the case is unique videofootage of the detention made by Russian soldiers.

Russian Government Registers Russian Justice Initiative
Russia's Federal Registration Service (FRS) has registered the branch office of Russian Justice Initiative (RJI) in Moscow. The office was entered into the registry of non-governmental organizations on 20 February 2007 after two previous rejections on technical grounds.

Russian Government Rejects Registration of Russian Justice Initiative for Second Time
Russia's Federal Registration Service (FRS) has refused to register the representative office of Russian Justice Initiative (RJI) in Moscow for a second time. The refusal comes just one day after the European Court of Human Rights found Russia guilty of torturing two Chechens in custody.
